Chapter Five
Conflict

IMG 1953 - Copy - Copy by KadeeLark

Alana and Lucy sat quietly on the bed, unsure of what to say or do. They had left the park with Dakota escorting them back safely to Alana's home. Their protector waited patiently somewhere outside.

Now, Alana was faced with a new challenge; How to explain herself to her best friend. She ran over words in her head but none of them sounded the way she'd like. She felt like scum, the worst friend in the world.

"Luce..." she began, but Lucy looked over at her with her big brown eyes and cut her off.

"Don't worry, Lana. I understand. When my grandmother passed away years ago, I had a hard time letting go of anything that was hers. When someone leaves us something precious we want to protect it at all costs. I would not have forgiven you if you just let those men take your necklace. Your father left that for you and it's something you cherish so much that it is a part of you."

Alana bit her lip and fought back the tears. "But Luce... I can't replace a friend! What would I have done if something bad had..." She couldn't bring herself to complete her sentence. She did not want to imagine a world without Lucy.

"I know what you mean," Lucy mumbled with a shudder. She turned back to her friend. "But, it's okay. Your hot friend there saved the day and we're both here to tell the tale. So, what else matters? Let's just let all this material talk go and just be glad we're both safe, okay?"

"Eh, what?" Alana gasped in surprise. "He's just some guy."

"Uh-huh. I'll believe that the day Canada stops loving hockey," Lucy joked with a wink.

"That's a horrible joke, Lucy."

"Well, it's true since most of us love hockey. Anyways, is he the guy you've told me about? The mysterious rude jerk?" Lucy inquired with an innocent look.

"So that's what the idiot's been saying bout me, huh?"

Alana looked up and saw Dakota leaning against the door frame, his eyes looking straight at them, those blue crystaline eyes piercing her straight through.

"See, Luce? He's a jerk, always calling me an idiot," Alana muttered in annoyance.

Lucy giggled and looked back at Dakota with an awe-struck face. "What is Mr. Rude Jerk's name?"

"She didn't tell you that?" Dakota asked in surprise. He looked somewhat perplexed but pleased. He turned away, hiding his face in what Alana thought was embarrassment. "In that case, I think it's best she tells you what's going on, since you are now involved with this crap."

"You sure that's okay?" Alana pondered in confusion.

"Yep. May as well let her in on it."

Alana took a deep breath, wondering how Lucy would react to all of it. She folded her hands in her lap, twiddling her thumbs nervously. She began to explain everything that had happened to her, telling her everything, even Dakota's name. Her friend stayed quiet, patiently listening to everything she had to say. When she was finished, Lucy was staring intently at Dakota.

"So..." Lucy began, giving Dakota a curious look. "Does Dakota have a girlfriend?"

"Hell no!" Dakota snapped, scowling at Lucy. "I don't need to be tied down by no whiny girl."

Lucy stuck her tongue out at the grouchy guy in the doorway. "Good that you're single! I'll make you fall for me, just you see!"

"Good luck, idiot," Dakota growled lowly, shoving his fists in his pockets.

Alana smirked. "See, Luce? He's just a jerk, like I said."

"You got that right, only he's a cute jerk!" Lucy giggled. She poked her friend in the cheek. "Lana, don't you worry about today. We'll always be friends no matter what. Don't beat yourself up!"

Alana bit her lip, trying to keep the tears from spilling out. Lucy always knew what to say, always forgave her friends, and always was true and loyal. "Thanks, Lucy. I'm... I'm glad we are friends."

"Of course! Anyways, I best get home to din-din! My mother is cooking up some vegetarian lasagna tonight and I don't wanna miss that. I'll see you on campus tomorrow! Oh, and Dakota? If you wanna come sneak in my window, you--"

"Not interested."

Alana tried to hide a smile from her friends as she found Dakota's bluntness amusing. She was relieved that she was still friends with Lucy, and relieved that Dakota had been able to save them. Inside, she still felt shaky and unsettled. Today could have ended badly...

"I'll see myself out! Take care, you two!" Lucy called as she trotted down the hallway to the stairs, waving behind her.

"So... How much coffee does she drink?" Dakota asked sarcastically.

"Dunno, maybe three or four cups a day?"

"That explains the fricken pep." Dakota looked a little uncomfortable. He had a bruise forming on his cheek and some scratches from the fight but his injuries seemed minor.

"Dakota... Are you having dinner with me today? You forgot to tell me."

"Oh. Right. If I have to I guess I will." Dakota rubbed his lip where the cut had started to crust over. It looked a little sore.

"Hey, why don't you go use our bathroom and get yourself cleaned up. I'm sure you'd like a nice warm bath instead of a dirty creek. Plus, I kind of had something special planned for tonight after dinner, so it'd be nice if you cleaned up a bit. While you are cleaning up, I'll change into something more comfortable..." Alana suggested, watching her gruff friend curiously. He was a strange guy so she wasn't sure how he'd react to her suggestion. Still, she wanted to show him some kindness for all the help he had given her up until now.

Dakota looked a little shocked, a little baffled, and a little flustered. "Look, I've had enough kindness from your giddy friend over there, but I think you smacked your head too hard today. I don't wanna--"

"Oh, just shut up and go have a bath. I'm not giving you a choice in this. You should just enjoy tonight and stop complaining!" Alana grumbled as she pushed a resisting Dakota out into the hallway towards the bathroom.
